Punting is a much more gentle exercise than this scene of sculling.
A punt is a small wooden construction flat bottomed boat which enables it to navigate even the shallowest of water. It has no commercial function only a social function.
Used on the river Thames extensively and other southern rivers where our weather in the summer can provide beautiful long and warm evenings. Tis a very peaceful, gentle and romantic way to entertain your lady.
The lady with be romantically dressed for the occasion with white flowing embroidery dress, and that very feminine summer hat with its wide brim to keep the sun out of the eyes. A posy of summer scented flowers are often presented for the occasion.
A large wicker work picnic hamper with salmon, champagne and good wines is always a must.
The man usually dressed in a white open neck shirt and precision pressed slacks, takes his lady on the river to hold their private picnic on some secluded spot know only to them. The lady will provocatively lounge in the punt as the man navigates the river.
The boat (punt) is propelled by a very long pole which is pushed onto the river bed and in so doing the punt moves at a very leisurely pace up or down the river.
There is a distinct knack in controlling this pole as it is fed out to push the punt forward and it is also used to steer the punt ensuring your lady remains in the shade of the trees overhanging the river bank.
This way the lady does not get too hot and avoids a sunburn. Only the Australian "Sheila" sees a charred skin as attractive.
The whole event is slow, leisurely and very romantic. This is hands off "Foreplay"
The novice however can mess up as his lack of skill makes the pole stick in the mud. As the punt continues to move the pole can get left behind much to the amusement of the more expert
Hence a "Stick in the mud" means you are not going anywhere
Having enjoyed your picnic and away from prying eyes, the punt becomes a very stable platform if events become...How shall I say this??...."More energetic"
There you have an explanation of punting...Clear as mud I guess
But I do believe it beats the hell out of "picking up some broad in a bar". A cultural difference between the "old world and the new"??
Not a lot of people knows that.... as Michael Caine would say
