Checking the integrity of system files

bullet

Having just had this computer up-graded
It made sense to re-format both the C and D drives.
So I started once again with a clean system
and it worked well for a couple of months.

bullet

Then I found little errors occuring with no error messages
to alert me. In my case the shut-down procedure was unreliable.
I therefore felt that some system file was becoming corrupted.
But which system file was the cause and how can I restore it??

bullet

Windows 98 will carry out self diagnosis and restore the file

bullet

So if you are experiencing similar minor problems,
I would suggest this routine

A WARNING...

Treat this procedure carefully and
think before you click on that mouse.
I do not want you to mess up your system
by being careless.

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm).

The Easy Way To Check Your System Files

In the run window type sfc Then hit the OK button

bullet

window

bullet

This will bring up a window that looks like this

window

bullet

Leave the Settings at default.
This ensures that you will not get into trouble.
Ensure that the Scan for altered files is checked.
Then hit the Start button

window
Windows 98 will check all your system files
and prompt you if any need replacing.
In my case the system file was restored from the
Win 98 back-up cache already on my C drive.
Just follow the prompts until you see this screen.

I dare say that the System File Checker may not solve all problems
But It has saved the day on my computer.
Anything that delays the inevitable re-format
has to be worth trying first.
