With a smile, we are repaid

For two long hours, we endure the flight
Checking and calculating, with all our might
Putting the Chopper, through her paces
Compiling records, as fast she races
![]()
Vibration, noise and the kerosene smell
This team has performed, so very well
My pilot’s skill, has proved him capable
That we declare, this chopper is serviceable

A contact, on the radar screen
2,000 feet above, and can be seen
Dutch Maritime Neptune, I do declare
Heading off, we know not where
![]()
Mayday !, Mayday !, comes the Squawk
The Dutch descend, just like the Hawk
Into the sea, their aircraft crashes
Stow the records, and off we dashes
![]()
The wreck is floating, off Jutland Head
13 souls awash, counted and read
To the winch, I must lead
Hope to the swimmers, we must feed
![]()
Wind is blowing, the sea state high
The sea is cold, and soon they’ll die
One by one, we begin the retrieval
The weather, against us and is quite evil
![]()
A successful recovery, it must be said
Of the 13, only one is dead
Bad enough, by all accounts
But could be worse, by large amounts
![]()
Using scant resources, we keep them warm
Head for the ship, away from harm
Once there, medics administer first aid
With a smile, we are repaid
