Windows 98

![]()
The Windows 98 Defrag program is very slow especially in the first few lines of the process. Windows ME introduced a much faster defrag program and this is compatible with Windows 98.

You can download this new ME version of the defrag program as a zip file by clicking here.
W9X-MeDefrag.zip
Select "Save This File To Disc". It is only 99kbs in size.

WinZip will unzip the program into your normal unzipped folder and you are left with a folder that looks like this.

Open the folder until it looks like this

Double clicking on the Install.bat file will install the new file defrag.exe into your windows folder and rename the existing defrag.exe to defrag.old.

Because I routinely delete all *.old files as part of my clean-up process, I strongly recommend that you copy the defrag.old file to a floppy disc and store it away safely. Then if you wish at a later date to go back to the old defrag program all you need to do is to rename it to defrag.exe and put it back into the windows folder, repacing the new defrag.exe in the process.

The read me files that come with this program refer to deleting all files in the C:\Windows\Applog which I assume is some sort of application log. I do not have such in my computer so I personally disregarded this suggestion.

I have used this ME defrag program a few times and although it appears very slow to initially start, once it gets running it completed the defrag process far faster than the windows 98 version
