Windows 98

If we do Part One and Part Two on a daily basis.
Try this Part Three weekly.
But do Part
One and Part Two first then this part.
You
will soon find it so easy to combine all three parts.
In this part we
shall identify and
delete almost all remaining trash in your
computer.
Before we start.
A
WARNING.
I and many others carry out this procedure
weekly.
However there has been one reported case of a temporary
file
Being required to run one very old and obscure program
But initially retain all the deleted files within the recycle
bin
For a few weeks or so. That way if your computer needs any
file
It will ask for it and you can restore that file from the recycle
bin
I personally have never had this happen. But you may wish to
"Play Safe"
Until you have gained your own
confidence
Hit the START
button and select FIND
Then select FILES or FOLDERS as seen
below
and the box "INCLUDE
SUBFOLDERS" is ticked
Then Type in *.tmp
The * means all
files and the .tmp means all files with that
extension
Then when you are ready, hit the FIND NOWbutton
The computer will then search
your C Drive for all remaining temporary
files
When the search has completed Select EDIT...
and then SELECT ALL This
will highlight all the files
found
Then Select FILE...and then DELETE
This will delete all the files
found
Then all *.tmp files are
removed to the re-cycle bin
Repeat this exercise
with *.bak
And delete all files found
Repeat this exercise with *.gid
And delete all files found
Repeat this
exercise with *.fts
And delete all files
found
Repeat this exercise with *.old
And
delete all files found
Repeat this exercise with *.chk
And delete all files found
Notice how
this drop down menu has remembered,
All your searches, therefore they are now
ready
to repeat this exercise again next week
If you have a D hard drive, repeat all with D:
Selected
So here ends the Third
Part of Basic housekeeping
But we still have a little more to do before
your computer
has been properly swept to remove the remaining
trash
